Important Disclaimer
Landing on Mars, isn’t your typical fluffy romance read. It is also not a story about finding love. It’s about two characters unexpectedly being exposed and finding the potential for something greater.
I believe you can have love without connection. You can find love and dance on a surface level. But at some point, the surface becomes unstable and unfulfilling as it lacks depth. We find true connection, true meaning in relationships when we find our person. Finding our person means being able to travel deep with them, being able to expose the unattractive wounds lingering inside of us. Mars, Nyla & Cianna are flawed characters. They are real and relatable. They are like many of us, contradicting themselves in the name of desire. They challenge expectations and all have strong emotions.
I intentionally avoided creating characters who always make the right decisions. My goal was to create characters who may not always be likable, who sometimes choose to lead without logical thinking, but are all undeniably human. This is the power of desire; it can be hard to resist, leading you to rebel against every righteous bone in your being. If you’re looking for borderline perfect characters who can do no wrong, you won’t find that here. You are going to want to strangle Nyla, possibly slap Cianna, and sigh at Mars. You may even want to throw the book across the room and question me. If you do, then I did what I intended.
Overall, my goal was to create a story with characters you have no choice but to understand and sympathize with despite their choices. Because amidst all we go through in real life, we need validation, to be sympathized with, or empathized with. Whether it comes from a healthy place or an undesirable place, we all seek to be understood.
